Car Rental at Santa Maria Airport: Is a Car Worth It on the Azores’ Sunniest Island?

Santa Maria is the Azores island most itineraries skip, which is exactly why it rewards a little planning: the airport has car rental desks in the arrivals hall, but the island’s stock of cars is small, so book before you fly, choose a mini or economy model for the steep lanes, and plan on two days of driving, because most of the beaches, viewpoints and the red desert of Barreiro da Faneca lie within about 20 to 30 minutes of the main town, Vila do Porto.

Santa Maria Airport Car Rental

It is an easy island to enjoy and a slightly awkward one to arrange. Fewer people live here than in a modest town on the mainland, buses are limited, and a taxi ride gets you to the first beach but not much further. This guide covers who you will actually meet at the airport, what the roads are like, how the days fit together, and the small decisions at pickup that matter more on an island where there is no second desk to try if the first one falls through.

Fly in, collect a small car at the arrivals hall, and keep it for two days. Book weeks ahead in summer. The car stays on Santa Maria, so if you are coming from São Miguel, you rent again on arrival rather than bringing one across.

An island people fly over

Santa Maria sits due south of São Miguel, about 17 km by 9 km, with roughly 5,500 residents and a reputation as the driest and sunniest of the nine islands. It lacks the giant crater lakes that fill brochures for its bigger neighbours, which is a large part of why visitors forget it. What it has instead is a white-sand beach, terraced vineyards falling into a bay, and a strip of red clay that looks more like a film set than a volcanic island.

Most people arrive on the short SATA Air Açores hop from Ponta Delgada, a flight of about 20 to 25 minutes. That short flight is the reason many visitors try Santa Maria as a day trip. It can be done, but it is rushed, and a car is what makes even a rushed day work. If you start from São Miguel, our guide to renting a car at Ponta Delgada Airport covers the big island, and the key point to remember is that the cars do not travel between islands, as we explain in our guide to inter-island car rental and ferry logistics. You rent on São Miguel, leave that car behind, and rent again on Santa Maria. If you are planning the São Miguel days as well, our four-day São Miguel road trip itinerary covers them.

Who you will meet in the arrivals hall

The airport’s rental desks sit in the arrivals area, and Europcar’s own page confirms a desk there that is open daily, Sundays included. Booking platforms list a longer cast for Santa Maria, with Avis, Sixt, Autatlantis, Green Island and the local specialist Ilha Verde appearing alongside Europcar, and an independent travel writer who knows the island singles out Ilha Verde for value and service. As on any small island, the name on a comparison site and the desk you physically meet can differ, so read the supplier line on your confirmation before you travel.

What matters more than the brand is the size of the fleet. Island guides repeat the same warning, that stock is limited, and it is worth taking seriously in July and August. A last-minute booking at the counter is a gamble you do not need to take. The cheapest categories are mini cars in the Twingo and Fiat Panda class, which also happen to suit the island best, since the lanes to the viewpoints are narrow and the villages tighter still. If you can only drive an automatic, reserve as early as you can; our note on automatic car hire in Portugal explains why they run out first.

At pickup, expect the standard paperwork: passport or ID, a driving licence, and a credit card in the main driver’s name. Our list of documents needed at the rental desk covers the details, and it is worth checking how much the desk will hold on the card, since small desks can differ; the usual ranges are in our guide to rental deposit amounts by car class.

The roads, honestly

Santa Maria is easy driving with one real exception. The main coastal road around Vila do Porto is straightforward, traffic is light, and most attractions sit within about 20 minutes of town. The exception is Pico Alto, the island’s highest point at about 590 metres, which is reached by steep secondary roads. It takes roughly 17 minutes to drive the 10 km from Vila do Porto along the EN1-2A and then up a side road, and you can drive almost to the top, with only a short walk and a few steps beyond the car park. The views from the top take in most of the island and, on a clear day, São Miguel in the distance, though communication masts block the southward view.

A few other things are worth knowing before you set off.

💸 Don’t Overpay at the Airport

Compare real-time rental deals with no hidden fees or credit card needed.

  • Weather changes the surface. After heavy rain the walking trails around Pico Alto turn to mud, so a dry morning is the better bet for the hike.
  • Parking is mostly free. Paid parking appears in parts of Vila do Porto during the day, and elsewhere you simply pull in beside the beach or viewpoint.
  • Fuel is easy. Europcar notes several petrol stations near the airport, so fill up on the way back as described in our note on refuelling before returning the car.
  • Rough tracks are not covered. Tyre and underbody damage on unpaved lanes is a common exclusion, so check our explainer on what a collision damage waiver does not cover before you drive down a dirt track to a quiet bay.

Two days that cover the island

Most visitors find that two days fit the main sights, with the beach as the reward at the end rather than a tight deadline. Here is a rough plan, built from what sits close together.

StopWhat it isWhy a car helps
Baía de São LourençoA bay with terraced vineyards and the island’s best-known viewpointThe viewpoint sits off the main road
Praia FormosaA long sweep of pale sand backed by dunesParking beside the beach beats waiting for a bus
Pico AltoThe island’s high point, with views over most of Santa MariaSteep final approach, with parking almost at the top
Barreiro da FanecaA red clay landscape sometimes called the island’s desertIsolated stop, impractical on foot from town
Anjos and the north coastSmall harbour village and coastal baysA relaxed afternoon drive, with several swimming spots

A sensible rhythm is the east on day one: São Lourenço first, then Praia Formosa for lunch and a swim. On day two, go up to Pico Alto while the weather is clear, descend to Barreiro da Faneca, and finish with the north coast and Anjos before returning to Vila do Porto. If you only have one day, choose São Lourenço and Praia Formosa and accept that the rest will wait.

Arrival day, small-island version

Inter-island flights can be retimed or cancelled, and a service that lands later than planned matters when a small desk closes for the evening. Send your flight details to the supplier in advance and ask what happens if you land late. If your plans may shift, the payment model also matters, and we compare the options in our guide to prepaying versus paying at pickup.

If Santa Maria is one stop on a longer Azores trip, our guide to renting a car in Lisbon to visit the Azores or Madeira helps you split the days sensibly, and the overview of car rental across the Portuguese islands shows how the other islands compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is there car rental at Santa Maria Airport? Yes. Europcar confirms a desk in the arrivals area, open daily including Sundays, and booking platforms also list Avis, Sixt, Autatlantis, Green Island and Ilha Verde.

Do I need a car on Santa Maria? For Vila do Porto alone, no. For the beaches, São Lourenço, Pico Alto and Barreiro da Faneca, a car is by far the easiest option, since public transport is limited.

How far is Santa Maria Airport from Vila do Porto? Sources put it between about 3 and 5 km, a taxi ride of around ten minutes.

How long does it take to see Santa Maria by car? Two days covers the main sights comfortably. Most attractions are within 20 to 30 minutes of Vila do Porto, and a rushed single day from São Miguel is possible.

What size of car is best? A mini or economy model. The lanes to the viewpoints are narrow, and the cheapest categories are also the easiest to park.

Can I bring a rental car from São Miguel to Santa Maria? Generally not. Rental cars are tied to their island, so you rent separately on Santa Maria.

Is it hard to drive to Pico Alto? The final approach uses steep secondary roads, but the drive from Vila do Porto takes about 17 minutes, and you can park almost at the top.

What happens if my flight to Santa Maria is delayed? Tell the desk your flight details in advance and ask about late arrivals. A booking you can pay for at pickup is less risky than a prepaid one if schedules shift.
