Portuguese Public Holidays and Car Rental: When the Counter Is Closed

Most car rental offices in Portugal close on 25 December and 1 January, and some local suppliers shut on a longer run of days, including 24 and 26 December, 25 April, 1 December and 8 December, so the safe rule for any trip that overlaps a public holiday is to check three things before you book: whether your pickup day is on the supplier’s closed list, what the desk hours are on the days around it, and whether the supplier allows pickup or return outside opening hours.

Portugal Holidays & Car Rental

A holiday closure rarely shows up on the booking page in large letters. It sits in the small print of the supplier’s location details, and you tend to discover it at the worst possible moment: the evening of 24 December, a delayed flight, a dark counter and a suitcase. This guide explains which days are affected, what “closed” actually means for pickup and return, and the simple habits that keep a holiday trip from starting with a taxi queue.

Before a holiday pickup, check three things. Is the day on the supplier’s closed list? Do the hours on the days either side leave room for a delayed flight? Does the supplier allow a key-box return, and is there a fee for it?

Which days actually shut the counter

Portugal has thirteen national public holidays, and most rental offices that publish a holiday list include at least two of them. The supplier pages we looked at tell the same story: a Porto operator and a Lisbon airport operator both list 25 December and 1 January as closed days, a desk at Horta Airport lists 25 December, and one Funchal supplier lists a much longer run, including 24 December, 26 December, 25 April, 1 December and 8 December. That spread is the point. There is no single national rule for rental offices, so the list on your own supplier’s page is the only one that counts.

Local holidays add another layer. Lisbon marks Saint Anthony on 13 June, Porto, Braga and several other towns mark Saint John on 24 June, and island municipalities have their own days, such as Funchal’s city day in August. Carnival is not an official public holiday, but some businesses give the day off anyway, so a small local office may close even though the calendar says otherwise.

What “closed” means for pickup

Closed does not always mean unreachable, but it does mean different rules. Large networks tend to be strict about collection: at Lisbon, Porto and Ponta Delgada airports, one major supplier’s location pages state that pickup outside opening hours is not offered, while returns are allowed outside hours at no extra charge. Smaller local operators work differently, and some publish a separate “out of hours” window with its own arrangements. A Porto supplier, for example, lists standard hours in the middle of the day and out-of-hours slots in the early morning and evening, with a key box for returns in the small hours.

The other rule worth knowing comes from one supplier’s terms on a major booking platform: it holds the car for one hour after your scheduled pickup, and only within normal business hours. If your flight lands late on a closed day, that hour does not stretch to cover you.

If you are landing on a holiday, you have three sensible choices:

  • Choose a desk that is open. A few Lisbon Airport operators run round the clock, which is why our guide to 24/7 car rental at Lisbon Airport is worth reading before you book a Christmas arrival.
  • Move the pickup. Collecting the next morning, once the desk reopens, is often cheaper than paying an out-of-hours fee, and the hotel is only a taxi ride away.
  • Ask for the arrangement in writing. If a supplier offers an after-hours handover, get the price and the procedure by email before you travel.

Delayed flights add another layer, because a late landing can turn an ordinary evening pickup into a closed-desk problem. Our note on grace periods after a flight delay or a long immigration queue explains what suppliers usually allow before they mark you as a no-show, and the usual weekend version of the same problem is covered in our guide to off-airport offices that close at weekends.

Returning the car on a holiday

Returns are the easier half, with one catch. Many suppliers let you drop the car outside opening hours and leave the keys in a box, and some publish a window for it, but traveller reviews show where it goes wrong: one visitor to Porto was told on arrival that the office was closed on Sunday and that the car should be left in a car park next door, and another reported an out-of-hours charge of about 50 dollars for a morning return that fell outside the supplier’s published hours.

💸 Don’t Overpay at the Airport

The practical rule is to treat an after-hours return like a mini pickup. Photograph the car at the spot where you leave it, including the fuel gauge and mileage, take a clear shot of the keys going into the box, and keep the confirmation email. We walk through the standard approach in our guide to returning a rental car at Lisbon Airport outside opening hours, and the checklist in our note on after-hours car returns at Lisbon Airport covers what to document so a later damage or fuel claim has nothing to stand on.

Booking around the busiest dates

Demand tends to rise around Christmas, Easter and the long weekends that holidays create, and smaller fleets sell out first. Book early, and favour a booking you can cancel, because holiday travel is more likely to change at the last minute. Our guides on when to book a car at Lisbon Airport and on free cancellation for airport rentals explain how to time and structure the booking so that a change of plan costs nothing.

Roads, closures and the days around a holiday

Holidays change more than rental desks. Transport strikes sometimes land on the day before a Friday holiday, so a flight or train connection on that day deserves a margin. Long weekends tend to put more traffic on the routes out of Lisbon and Porto, so allow extra time on the way to the airport for a return.

Festival days reshape local driving too. On Saint John’s night in late June, large parts of central Porto are closed to cars, and our guide to driving and parking in Porto explains where to leave the car. In Braga, Holy Week brings its own traffic changes, covered in our note on driving in Braga during Holy Week, and the pilgrim crowds at Fátima need a plan of their own, which our guide to driving and parking at Fátima provides.

A short holiday checklist

  • Open your supplier’s location page and find the list of closed days.
  • Compare it with your flight dates, including the day before and the day after.
  • If you land late, ask in writing about after-hours pickup, and expect that major suppliers may refuse it.
  • Plan the return the same way: confirm the key-box procedure and any out-of-hours fee.
  • Photograph the car and the keys at the drop-off point.
  • Book a cancellable rate and keep the confirmation email.

Frequently asked questions

Are car rental offices in Portugal open on Christmas Day? Many are not. Several supplier pages list 25 December as closed, and some also list 24 and 26 December. Check the location page of your supplier.

Are rental offices open on New Year’s Day? Several suppliers at Lisbon and Porto list 1 January as a closed day, so plan the pickup or return for another date or choose a desk that is open.

Can I pick up a rental car outside opening hours in Portugal? It depends on the supplier. Some major networks say outside-hours pickup is not offered at certain airports, while some local operators publish out-of-hours slots, often with a fee.

Can I return a car when the office is closed? Often yes. Many suppliers allow a key-box return and some say there is no extra charge, but others bill an out-of-hours fee, so confirm it in writing.

Which public holidays does Portugal have? Thirteen national ones, from New Year’s Day and Good Friday through Easter, 25 April, 1 May, Corpus Christi, 10 June, 15 August, 5 October, 1 November, 1 and 8 December and Christmas Day, plus local days such as 13 June in Lisbon and 24 June in Porto.

Is Carnival a public holiday in Portugal? Not officially, but some businesses and offices close for it, so a small local desk may be shut.

What if my flight lands after the desk has closed on a holiday? Tell the supplier your flight number in advance, ask about after-hours handover, and be ready to collect the car the next morning. A booking you can cancel makes that choice easier.

Do rental prices rise around holidays? Demand usually rises around Christmas, Easter and long weekends, so booking early and with free cancellation is the safer approach.
